CHARLOTTE — Charlotte Douglas International Airport no longer ranks among the world’s busiest airports for passenger traffic.
Airports Council International released preliminary data yesterday that leaves off Charlotte Douglas from its list of the world’s 10 airports with the highest passenger counts in 2022. CLT ranked at No. 6 in 2021, soaring 12 spots from the previous year.
In a press release, ACI notes that its latest ranking indicates that international travel has returned after Covid-19 rocked the industry in 2020. In 2022, global passenger traffic rose 53.5% over the year to reach nearly 7 billion. That’s 73.8% of passenger levels in 2019.
Five of the 10 airports on the list are located in the U.S., boosted by strong domestic travel. That’s led by Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
