James W. Smith Sr. leaves behind a rich tapestry of accomplishments. Born and raised in Corning, he graduated from Corning Free Academy and went on to earn his degree from Colgate University. His journey in education laid the foundation for a remarkable life characterized by dedication, resilience, and a commitment to excellence.
The Corning Building Company: A Family Legacy
Jim’s professional journey was deeply intertwined with the Corning Building Company, where he began working in 1956. His leadership qualities shone brightly as he ascended to the role of president, serving from 1968 to 1993. Alongside his late wife, Joanna P. Smith, who was Secretary/Treasurer, they nurtured a family legacy. Today, their sons, James Jr. and Matthew, carry forward the torch, ensuring the continued success of the Corning Building Company.
Passions and Pursuits: Golf, Fishing, and Bridge
Beyond the boardroom, Jim was an avid golfer, leaving an indelible mark on the Corning Country Club by winning its championship in four different decades, starting at the young age of 17. His love for fishing found expression in serene moments at his homes in Florida and Keuka Lake. In later years, Jim embraced the camaraderie of bridge, engaging with fellow residents at Appleridge in Horseheads.
A Dedicated Community Leader: Contributions Beyond Measure
Jim’s commitment to community service was exemplary. He generously devoted his time to the Boy Scouts, served as President of the Corning Rotary Club, and contributed to numerous boards, including Three Rivers Development, Norstar Bank, and the Corning Chamber of Commerce. His impact resonated through his involvement with organizations such as the United Way, Salvation Army Advisory, Corning Country Club, and YMCA. Jim’s service was acknowledged with the Rotary’s Paul Harris Award and the Greater Corning Area Chamber of Commerce John G. Eberenz Enterprise Award, jointly received with Joanna in 1991. The Distinguished Citizen Award from the 5 Rivers Council of the Boy Scouts of America followed in 1995.
